Should I Have Solar Installed if I Live in Las Vegas?
Residential and commercial solar technology continues to evolve, and so do tax credits for installing solar in Las Vegas and throughout the country. If you’ve previously contemplated whether solar makes sense for your home or business building, 2023 may indeed be the year to invest in panels.
The Benefits of Installing Solar
The benefits that solar panels offer are multifold, and they’re only improving as technology advances. Some of the main ones to consider are the following.
Renewable Energy
First and foremost, installing solar is doing right by the environment. Solar is a renewable
resource that doesn’t cause pollution. Using renewable resources might be part of your business’s mission or vision statement, and it’s certainly a marketing tactic for some customer bases.
Energy Cost Savings
When your home or building generates its own electricity, you don’t have to pay for that electricity.
Switching to solar in Las Vegas can generate substantial savings in even a small to moderate home. Those savings only increase with home or building size. Savings only compound with time -- and will quickly outgrow the upfront investment in most use cases.
With all of the sun that Las Vegas gets, your home might even generate enough electricity to sell it back to the grid. How much would it help your personal or business budget to be making money on electricity rather than paying for it?
Tax Credits for Solar in Las Vegas
There are tax credits available throughout the country, but they’re especially good if installing solar in Las Vegas. Some of the tax benefits that are available in 2023 include:
- Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC): The federal tax credit for residential solar has been increased to 30% starting this year. There’s no cap on how much this tax credit is.
- Net Metering: For any excess electricity that’s sold back to the grid, NV Energy customers receive a credit equal to 75% of the retail electricity rate. Valley Electric Association customers receive the same credit, based on the rate that they pay.
- Battery Rebate: NV Energy customers are eligible for a rebate when installing a new solar system battery. Time of Use (TOU) customers get up to $3,000, and non-TOU customers are eligible for up to $1,500. Actual rebates are based on the watt-hours of storage that a batter has.
Solar access laws in Nevada also guarantee you the right to install solar panels on an owned house or commercial building -- regardless of any other stipulations from HOAs or similar entities.
The Process of Installing Solar
Installing solar is a fairly straightforward process and one that thousands of homeowners and businesses have successfully completed without hassle. To have solar panels installed on your home or building, the process typically goes as follows:
- Site Evaluation: The installer visits your home/business location to assess your need and suitability. They’ll check the roof, attic, electrical system, and battery (if applicable).
- System Design: A system is designed for the specific location and approved by the homeowner/business owner.
- Permit Approval: Installer submits design and permitting documents to Las Vegas for approval to ensure compliance with safety codes.
- Installation: Solar system installation usually takes one to two days. While our installers do the work, power may need to be turned off temporarily.
- Final City Inspection: City inspector checks that the installation is in compliance with the permitted scope of work.
- Utility Connection: The utility company approves the connection to the grid, inspects the project, and may upgrade the meter for net metering.
